Don’t Panick!

Does the thought of even throwing the smallest gather put you into a spin? All the cleaning, and food prep and beverages, Oh My! Let me show you a way to make hosting easy breezy.

Step One – If this is a casual gathering do not let the house worry you. We are all working adults, most have kids or grandkids and life happens. No need to chuck everything into the closet and try to slam the door. Straighten up, fold the couch blanket, tidy the kitchen but scrub the guest bath. No on wants to go into the scary bathroom. No one!

Step Two – BYOB… you heard me BYOB. There is nothing wrong with asking your guest to bring their preferred drink. You do not have to go to the liquor store and purchase $500 dollars of liquor unless…. You invite them for a specialty evening. If you are hosting a wine tasting event then you would provide the wine. If it’s taco and margaritas, you provide the margaritas*. Once again, easy breezy.

*Note if you do make a big batch of a drink keep the ice separate until you are serving. This will stop the drink from getting diluted.

Step Three – If you ever watch Ina Garten she does the most wonderful cocktail hours. Nothing fancy, some mixed nuts that she put in a beautiful bowl, so homemade chips, I have even seen popcorn. So unless you are hosting a 5 course dinner party, lighten up on yourself. Keep it casual and keep it about the company.

Step Four –  Always have background music. It helps with awkward pauses in conversation when thing are just getting going and provides a nice ambient background noise.

Step Five – Make everyone feel included. Don’t let the wallflower sit on the wall. Be sure to welcome everyone and let them know that you are happy that they could join you in your home.
